Located in the heart of Phil Campbell is the Phil Campbell High School. This school is part of the Franklin County School District. The school has a student population of 443 students. In addition, the school has a full-time teaching staff of 26. The average per-student spending is the highest of any school in the district.
The Phil Campbell High School does have some impressive athletic achievements. The Bobcat baseball team finished the 2021 season with a 41-6 record. The first football team was fielded in 1927, and the school’s first varsity basketball team won a state championship in 1947.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the school is its reputation as a center of the arts. It has had twelve projects funded on DonorsChoose.com. The most recent project was a multimedia and interactive display. The school’s signature program, the AVID (Advanced Visual and Information Design) curriculum, has been described as a model for other schools in the county.
The town is also home to Dismals Canyon, a privately owned natural conservatory. This area is rich in natural features, including nature trails, rock formations, and a swimming pool. The canyon has been deemed a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service.
The city of Phil Campbell was also the site of the largest tornado in Alabama history. This tornado measured EF5 and caused substantial damage to many buildings in the central part of town. The estimated wind speed was 210 mph.
