Panthers Offensive Coordinator History

panthers offensive coordinator history

Having spent most of my life watching and reading about football, I am always interested in how teams come together and how they are coached. This is especially true for the Panthers. They have had some of the most famous offensive coordinators in the game including Peyton Manning, Tony Romo, and even Jay Gruden. What is important to remember is that they have all had to learn to work with their respective teams and they have all had to learn how to coach.

Brady

During the bye week, the Carolina Panthers fired their offensive coordinator, Joe Brady. They also traded quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the Denver Broncos.

The Panthers’ offense has struggled in each of the last two seasons. The Panthers’ offense is ranked 24th in the league in average scoring offense and 29th in rushing offense. The Panthers have only ranked in the top half in passing offense and total offense in each of the last two seasons.

There are several reasons for the team’s offense to be so deficient. One reason is their offensive line. Another reason is the talent of the skill players. The Panthers have a talented running back, Christian McCaffrey, but he has missed several games this season with injury.

Tom Brady was also a superstar in college football. He was a member of the LSU Tigers’ national championship team and won the Frank Broyles Award as the country’s top assistant coach. He also helped quarterback Joe Burrow win the Heisman Trophy.

During his tenure with the Carolina Panthers, Brady was a top-shelf NFL coordinator. He was the youngest offensive coordinator in the NFL when he was hired. He also has a ton of experience for a 32-year-old. His offense is reminiscent of the offense that Sean Payton ran for the New Orleans Saints.

Cignetti

During his career, Frank Cignetti has coached at six Football Bowl Division programs. His teams have compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 78-96-2. He has earned berths in the semifinals four times.

He started as a graduate assistant under Mike Gottfried at the University of Pittsburgh in 1989. He served as a receivers coach at IUP from 1990 to 1998. He then served as an offensive coordinator for IUP for the final two seasons. He coached quarterbacks for the New Orleans Saints in 2000 to 2001.

Cignetti has coached in the NFL for 11 seasons. He has worked with a number of quarterbacks, including Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning and Sam Bradford. He has been a part of a number of NFL teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs, the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers.

Before joining the NFL, Cignetti coached at the college level for more than twenty years. He was an offensive coordinator at Boston College in 2020 and 2021. He helped transform BC’s ground and pound offense into a passing offense that was 24th in the nation. He was also the head coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania from 1986 to 2005. He coached IUP to two NCAA Division II national championship games.

Pendry

During his career as an offensive coordinator, Joe Pendry has coached nearly every offensive position. He has been to the playoffs 11 times, and has a cumulative win/loss record of 173-145-1. In fact, Pendry is the third most successful offensive coordinator in Panthers history.

Joe Pendry was part of the inaugural staff at Memorial Stadium. His duties included assisting new offensive coordinator John Kiesau with the transition of the offense. His work also included assisting former Tide offensive coordinator Jim McElwain with special projects.

Pendry has been involved in the NFL for almost two decades. He has worked for six different teams. He has been offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, New York Giants, and Dallas Cowboys.

Pendry began his coaching career in the NCAA ranks at West Virginia University. He was a student coach in 1967 and 1968. He was a graduate assistant coach in 1969 and 1970.

He went on to coach for a number of professional teams, including the Kansas State Buckeyes (1975-1976), the Pittsburgh Maulers (1984-1985), the Cleveland Browns (1998-2000), and the Pittsburgh Steelers (2001-2005).

He was a special assistant for Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide from 2007-2010. He also served as an offensive line coach for the Crimson Tide.

Steichen

Almost two months after the Carolina Panthers fired head coach Matt Rhule, Steichen is on the short list of potential head coaches. He is the third most likely candidate, according to Sportsbooks.

Having worked with Philip Rivers for years, Steichen has a good idea of what he’s working with. He also has a good rapport with the quarterback, who has helped ease the transition. Steichen has been with Rivers’ team for 16 seasons, so he knows the organization well.

While the Panthers have a rough start to the season, they have shown that they can run the ball. The offense has averaged 21 points a game during Weeks 2-7. That’s sixth in the league in EPA/play.

Steichen calls Rivers a “phenomenal player.” He has been doing football for a long time, and he’s a very smart player. He makes adjustments very easily, and he has a great football IQ.

In a recent interview with the San Diego Chargers, Steichen talked about his approach to guiding the Bolts’ offense. He said that the preparation aspect didn’t change this week.

Kafka

During his five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Mike Kafka became a major player in the development of Patrick Mahomes. Kafka also helped Mahomes earn the franchise’s first NFL MVP award.

Before becoming a quarterbacks coach for the Chiefs, Kafka was an offensive quality control coach. He joined Andy Reid’s coaching staff in 2017. In his time with the Chiefs, he worked as a passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was also a graduate assistant at Northwestern, which is where he got his start in coaching.

Before working with the Chiefs, Kafka spent time on practice squads with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans. He was also a member of the New England Patriots’ practice squad during the 2013 season.

Kafka has also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent two seasons as a backup quarterback. He was considered a rising star in coaching, and Andy Reid was impressed with his intelligence.

Kafka also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cincinnati Bengals. He was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2018. In the future, he will be the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants.

O’Connell

Despite the fact that he’s never been a starting quarterback in the NFL, Mike O’Connell’s offensive coordinator history has been quite impressive. He’s thrown for 7,689 yards and 46 touchdowns in his career, and his offense ranked fourth in passing yards during his time at San Diego State. He has also worked for several different NFL coaches, including Jay Gruden and Bill Callahan.

It’s no surprise that the Patriots recruited O’Connell when he was a junior at San Diego State. At the time, Scott Pioli was the Patriots’ vice president of player personnel, and he quickly identified O’Connell as the ideal target.

He’s had the opportunity to work under Bill Belichick, and he’s been impressed with his attention to detail. The Patriots have a history of reinventing schemes, and O’Connell has already tried to incorporate some of Belichick’s flair for the unusual.

O’Connell has also gotten a nice upgrade at running back, with Dalvin Cook. He’s also not taking a hit in the receiving core, thanks to Adam Thielen and K.J. Osborn. He’s got a little bit of downgrade at quarterback, with Kirk Cousins replacing Matthew Stafford.

Hamilton

During his time in the NFL, Pep Hamilton has been an offensive coordinator in a few different spots. He’s most recently been in charge of the passing game for the Houston Texans.

While in Houston, Hamilton was responsible for the passing game and the overall offensive scheme of the team. He also worked closely with quarterback coach Jim Hostler. Hamilton has a knack for developing quarterbacks. He has mentored former Stanford starting quarterback Andrew Luck, who became an NFL quarterback. He also worked with quarterback Alex Smith.

Hamilton was an offensive coordinator for three seasons in the NFL. He was also an offensive quality control coach for two seasons and quarterbacks coach for one season. He’s a master of the no-look pass and knows how to orchestrate an offense. He’s also the type of coach who uses information resources to teach players.

Hamilton is a veteran NFL assistant, having worked in the league since 1997. His experience includes the NFL, college football, and the XFL. He’s had a slew of different titles, from quarterbacks coach to offensive quality control to passing game coordinator.

Gruden

During his six-year stint with the Washington Redskins, Jay Gruden compiled a 35-49-1 record. The Panthers have a strong group of players, but they need a quarterback.

Gruden coached a top-15 offense in each of his first five seasons as a head coach. Washington finished 9-7 in his second season and supplanted Dallas as the NFC East champions. However, they were beaten by an 11-5 Packers team in the first round of the playoffs.

Gruden has coached the Associated Press’ Offensive Rookie of the Year, Brian Griese, who established franchise marks for yards per pass attempt, completion percentage and passer rating. In addition, Brian Griese threw a touchdown pass in his first 12 consecutive games.

Gruden also led the Buccaneers to top-5 defense finishes in each of his first two seasons. In addition, the defense led the NFL in passing defense in 2002.

Gruden has coached four players to Pro Football Hall of Fame selections, including Rich Gannon and Tim Brown. He was also named the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Coach of the Year in 2010.

Jay Gruden served as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2011 to 2013. He was hired by Ray Rhodes in 2011. His coaching tree combines for a 329-343-2 record in regular seasons and 15-14 in the playoffs.
