College readiness rating for different races/ethnicities

Using SAT scores, researchers have calculated a College Readiness Rating for different races and ethnicities. This indicator shows how students perform on grade point averages, taking and passing Advanced Placement (AP) exams, and other indicators. The results show significant racial disparities.

The study looked at four cohorts of Indiana students entering grade nine in 2014/15 and 2017/18. The results show that Black or African American students are less likely to meet the college readiness benchmark than Asians and Hispanics. This difference may indicate that some students are not getting support.

For Asian American students, the numbers are not as discouraging. Nevertheless, the percentage of students achieving proficiency in reading/language arts and math are lower than the state average. Almost half of students attend a school where students do not meet the state’s 40th percentile in those two subjects.

One in three students in the study graduated college-ready. The percentage of those who completed a four-year degree is about the same as the national sample.
