Despite a tough schedule, the Oak Grove Tigers are looking to improve their record. With a talented team led by head coach Brian Gregory, the team is bringing back some of the best players in the state, and should make a strong push in the season’s second half.
Despite being beaten by a rival on their home field last week, the Northside High School oak grove tigers are still a threat to make a run at a state title. They have a chance to take a win against defending 1A champion Homer next week.
The Rams started the game with good field position. The first quarter ended with a score. In the second, the Rams scored six points. They kept Cleburne County off the scoreboard the rest of the game. After the half, the Rams had the ball for nine minutes. On the third drive of the second half, the team scored two touchdowns. They also forced a fumble that led to a touchdown.
In the first half, both teams scored three touchdowns. Collin Pate of Oak Grove threw a one-yard touchdown pass and T.R. Miller of Northside had a five-yard touchdown run.
The first quarter was the only score of the first half. In the second, the teams traded touchdowns. Then in the third, the teams scored 13 points. On their final drive of the game, the Rams scored a touchdown. On that drive, they only threw one pass.
Braden Green had a pair of passing touchdowns and also had a rushing touchdown. He threw for 103 yards and added 30 carries for 209 yards. The game is also the second game of his career. In the semi-final victory over Ascension Catholic, he recorded a pick six. He also recorded 11 tackles.
The team will face a tough game in the first round of the state playoffs against defending 1A champion Homer. In the past, teams have played 11 games. In the future, teams will be allowed to play 10 games in 11 weeks.
The Oak Grove varsity football team beat Haynesville 49-7 this year. They are on the verge of a seventh state title. They have a chance to win the state championship for the fourth straight year. They are 29-0 at Steven Fitzhugh Field. They are also on the verge of a fifth state title. The LSWA Class 4A All-State basketball team has named Solomon Washington as the boys MVP.
Having led Oak Grove to a runner-up finish in the LHSAA Class 1A State Championship game last year, Coach Gregory and his Tigers were looking for a repeat. After winning 10 straight games and a 7-0 District 2-1A record, the Tigers were in the driver’s seat to claim their third straight district title.
After beating Delhi Charter 23-20 in Week 2 and knocking off No. 1 Kentwood in Week 3, the Tigers entered the postseason with a 71-20 overall record. It’s no secret that Oak Grove is a powerhouse in football. The Tigers have five district titles, three runner-up finishes and one state championship under Gregory’s watch.
Although the Tigers won’t be playing in the Superdome next season, the athletics department has some of the best players in Class 1A. It’s no wonder that New Orleans Saints tapped Coach Gregory to be the 2020 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year.
The Tigers won their first state championship since 2001. They topped White Castle 55-12 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Prep Classic. The win was a tribute to a stellar defense, a ground and pound attack led by Ron Craten, and an impressive kickoff return by Kelvin Holloway.
The Tigers also won their third straight district championship. They will compete in redrawn AHSAA Class 4A, Region 5 in 2022. They have a talented roster, led by junior running back E.J. Anderson and a physical run game. The Tigers have a great coaching staff and a strong athletic program. During the summer, the team played more athletic teams than they did in the regular season.
The Tigers haven’t lost in regulation in six straight years. In fact, they have been in the state semi-finals for three of the past four seasons. It’s no surprise that the Tigers won’t have a tough time in their quest for a fourth consecutive state championship. This is a testament to Coach Gregory’s dedication to his team and to the community.
The Tigers’ 2-1 start to the 2017 season raised a few eyebrows. They were missing 22 seniors from last season’s state semifinal squad.
Despite the fact that Oak Grove was in the throes of an unseemly 0-3 tussle, the Tigers rolled it out in style. They racked up the most wins in a row in the latest incarnation of the Diva division. This should make for a smooth ride into the winner’s circle. The Oak Grove dynasty hasn’t been this good since the halcyon days of yore. The Tigers also won the most outright conference titles in the state in recent memory. The team will be vying for the most crowns in the upcoming conference tournament. The oak tree is a veritable fortress in this conference. The best bets in the upcoming conference shuffle will be the teams vying for the aforementioned title. The aforementioned Tigers have a legitimate shot at a berth in the playoffs. The Tigers also boast a slew of varsity stars to be rewarded in the near future. This should go a long way in helping the Tigers secure their coveted throne. They may not be the highest scoring teams in the state but they’re still the top dogs in their respective conferences. Their win ratio isn’t too shabby at a ten and twelve respectively. The Tigers have a solid chemistry program and their plethora of varsity players should provide a nice cushion. The Tigers will be tested on the road in the coming weeks and months.
Earlier this season, Oak Grove made its fourth trip to the Superdome in five years. The Warriors hosted Warren Central, which was a perfect team for Oak Grove, and the Vikings responded with an overtime touchdown and two-point conversion. Despite being down by 10 points with under three minutes left in the game, the Warriors forced overtime and scored a touchdown to win 49-7. They will face the defending 1A state champions, Homer, in the final.
Hattiesburg is a multi-faceted team that has a stingy defense, led by quarterback Jamal Hatten, who has accounted for 1,448 yards of total offense. He has also accounted for 12 touchdowns. The Tigers have a three-game winning streak, and have created 27 turnovers in nine games. They play host to Oak Grove in a crucial game for both teams on Friday. Both teams will look to clinch a playoff spot in Region 3-6A.
The Farmers’ revenge tour has just one more stop before the program achieves its first state title since 2013. They must beat Vermillion Catholic, which is currently the top seed in Region 3-6A.
