Located in Mountain Brook, Alabama, Mountain Brook High School is the only public high school in the Mountain Brook City School System. It is a three-year public high school that participates in AHSAA Class 6A athletics. The school’s colors are green and gold. The athletic teams are called the Spartans.
Despite the tough competition in the field, the Mountain Brook High School math team came away with two second-place finishes at the UAB Mathematical Talent Search. The MTS is a competition for students in grades 9-12. It features five or seven problems of increasing difficulty.
The math department at UAB hosts a contest for local high school students each year. The student winners receive a certificate and a book about mathematics.
Aside from the math contest, the department also offers a “train your brain” math club. In this program, professors grade math tests in less than two hours. During this year’s UAB MTS, 84 students from eight schools participated. The contest is held in the fall and resumed in October.
For the past 20 years, the department has offered a math contest to local high school students. Some of the most impressive results from last year’s contest were displayed at the awards ceremony.
The UAB MTS had several high-ranking competitors. One of them was a senior who earned a place on the 2022 Presidential Schollar Award team. Another was an 11th grader who qualified for USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad.
The math department also hosted an in-class mini Christmas tournament that featured Venn diagrams. The students placed in the top 25 in the nation.
The Mountain Brook High School math team’s other big-ticket item was a perfect score in the State Mathcounts Tournament. The other was a special award winner.
Aside from the competition, the UAB Department of Mathematics also offers a math school by correspondence. These programs are geared towards students who need additional instruction and are not able to travel to campus. The department also hosts a math club for students in grade school.
Founded in 1947, the American Field Service (AFS) has been in the business of high school student exchange for more than half a century. The program was started by young Americans who believed that people of different cultures could benefit from meeting.
For a while, Mountain Brook High School had fraternities and sororities, but these days, it’s all about the AFS.
The AFS chapter in Mountain Brook sponsoring international students to other countries is just one of many clubs at the school. It has an ambassadors club, which provides guidance to new students and assists them with their academic goals. In addition, the high school is home to the Spartan Creed, which is a motto written by the student government.
Other notables at the school include a strong girls tennis team and a debate team. The school has also been ranked as a top school in the state for math proficiency and overall test scores. The Spartans have also won a number of Alabama state championships.
Another AFS related event is a yearly event called Brookstock. It’s held in the campus parking lot and features a number of high school bands. The event is a fundraiser for various campus service organizations. The MBHS Interact Club puts on the event, which lasts through the night. It also includes local restaurants and establishments, along with a number of sponsored events.
The AFS chapter in Mountain Brook is also the home to a state-of-the-art library. The school is ranked second in the state for the number of books in the library. AFS has also been recognized by the College Board for its participation in the Advanced Placement Program.
Despite a population of 97.2 percent white, Mountain Brook High School is considered one of the top schools in Alabama. It has earned a top score in math and reading proficiency and placed within the top five percent of all schools in Alabama for overall test scores. It also holds 23 state tennis championships.
The school system started in 1959 as a way to avoid federal desegregation. It has retained 80 teachers over the past five years.
The school system partnered with the Anti-Defamation League to offer diversity training to its staff and students. However, the board cut ties after it became aware of anti-Semitic events in the community. The school district has since said it will continue to offer diversity training.
The school system recently formed a diversity committee to review current practices. It is comprised of school leaders, parents, and local community members. The committee is charged with developing programs for each of the Mountain Brook schools to enhance diverse experiences for students. They also develop a method of communication with the community and work to identify areas of improvement.
The committee reviewed a variety of resources. They also considered the recommendations from the school system’s No Place for Hate framework. They also identified five recommendations for the school board.
The committee did not mention allowing employees to enroll their children in city schools, and the board is looking for an alternative framework. They are planning three interactive activities for the school year that will encourage diverse interactions among students. They will also implement bullying education for all students.
The school system is also seeking to develop a separate diversity training program for teachers, students, and administrators. It is unclear how long the framework will last, but the school system has vowed to create local diversity committees.
Despite losing in the semifinals each of the past two years, the Mountain Brook Spartans will play in the Class 6A state championship game on Dec. 2 against Saraland. It has been 26 years since the Spartans have played for a state title, but they will have a chance to make it happen again.
Coach Jeff Kelly has led the Spartans to two 6A titles in the last three seasons. The team has lost only one game to a Region 1 champion.
In a game that was close throughout, Mountain Brook scored twice in the first period, and then settled for a field goal on the first drive of the second. Then, the Mountain Brook defense held Saraland in check the rest of the way.
In the Class 6A state championship game, Ryan Williams led Saraland to a 38-17 win. The Crimson Tide commit accounted for 272 yards of offense and made the final case for Mr. Football.
The Spartans’ quarterback John Colvin and wide receiver Clark Sanderson connected on 10 passes for 153 yards. Cole Gamble added a short touchdown with 2:51 to go in the first half.
The defense held Saraland to just 358 rushing yards. The Spartans converted two third downs on the final two plays of the first half. The Spartans were able to hold Saraland in check in the fourth quarter, and then settled for a 33-yard field goal by Jack Heaps.
The second-ranked Spartans will face Saraland for the Class 6A state title on Dec. 2. It has been nearly 20 years since the Spartans have played for the state title, and this year they are in the running for their first.
Among the many high schools in the country, Mountain Brook is one of the few with a student population of over 1,000. Located in the Jefferson County community of Mountain Brook, Alabama, the school’s campus sits on 25 acres of land and is part of the city’s school system. Founded in 1966, the school offers a number of academic courses.
During the 2004-2005 school year, Mountain Brook High School graduated a total of 1013 students. The lone high school in the city’s school system, the school serves students in grades nine through twelve. It’s been recognized by Newsweek as one of the top 100 high schools in the country.
The school’s athletic programs have won numerous state championships over the years. The volleyball teams have racked up 23 state titles, and the football team has won two state championships. This is a feat unmatched by any other public school in Alabama.
The student population at Mountain Brook High School is racially diverse. Nearly all the students are white, but there are significant numbers of Indian, Asian, and Hispanic students. The school also ranks well on the diversity scale, with 5% of the student population being minority.
The school boasts an impressive array of academic clubs and athletic activities. The campus is home to a library with audiovisual materials and various books. It’s also home to an AFS chapter, which sponsors international students to attend the school.
