Whether you are a fan of Jefferson Davis High School football, or you are just interested in the sport itself, there are many things that you should know. From the CIF Southern Section playoffs to Homecoming and Long Beach Poly, there are plenty of topics that you should be aware of.
Despite a sluggish start, Jefferson Davis County won their third state football championship in five years. They defeated Amory High School 42-10. The victory was their ninth in the last nine seasons under coach Lance Mancuso.
Amory had its chances in the first half. The Panthers put themselves in scoring position on two occasions, but their drives stalled in the red zone due to false start penalties. The first drive ended at the JDCHS 22-yard line. On the second drive, Amory had two plays. One of the plays was a fumble by Marcus Ross at the 26-yard line. After the ball was recovered by Amory, a false start penalty put the Panthers back five yards. The next play, Demarrio Booth was stopped in his tracks. He finished the play with an interception.
Booth and Hartzog combined for 335 yards and six touchdowns. Hartzog also ran for two scores, including a 61-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. He added a two-point conversion. The Jaguars were up 27-13 at the half.
Jefferson Davis County cut the lead to 27-20 with 9:39 to go in the third quarter. Amory recovered a fumble. Booth scored on a 32-yard run and a 44-yard run. He rushed 17 times for 205 yards and four touchdowns.
After Amory tied the game at 20-20 with a touchdown, Jefferson Davis County scored the first two touchdowns of the second half. Booth scored on a 61-yard run and Hartzog punched in a one-yard run.
Despite the fact that they have the dubious distinction of being the least likely to score an A+ in the state of Alabama, Jefferson Davis has managed to produce a slew of marquee performers in the sports and academic arenas. One of the most notable accomplishments is a winning varsity football program. The other notable is the requisite number of grad students vying for the coveted post grad stips. Not to mention the plethora of fine faculty and alumni that make up the rest of the faculty. As a testament to the aforementioned grad students, the school was inducted into the Alabama State Alliance for Academic Excellence. The best place to start is the campus library where the aforementioned grad students can learn and excel in the same space.
During the first week of October Jefferson Davis County will be hosting a pair of local luminaries. The county’s football and cheerleading teams will take the field against the Poplarville Hornets and the Pearl River Central Lions. The football season opener will be played at 7:30 pm, while the girls’ game will be played at 5:00pm. The girls’ game is not a cupcake, despite the unfortunate sexisms that befell the team last year. Despite the aforementioned setbacks, the ladies will be treated to some serious cheerleading during the evening’s festivities.
As a side note, the Jefferson Davis County High School’s football program was a resounding flop last season, but its retooled cheerleading squad was the unsung hero of the team, and a model of true spirit. Despite the mediocre performance, the team still managed to make the playoffs. The aforementioned aforementioned Lady Lions are led by a sprightly captain, snarky yet savvy senior captain, and a slew of talented understudies. The girls’ varsity team has a solid foundation in the offensive department and has the goods to be a contender in the AHSAA Class 3A playoffs.
Several Southern California high school football players were recognized this year on the CIF Southern Section All-State Football Team. These players were selected by a panel of 28 individuals, including coaches and former coaches, as well as media members.
In addition to the football All-State Team, the CIF Southern Section also released an All-State Girls Basketball Team. This year’s All-State Football team includes four players from San Diego and 10 from the rest of the state.
In addition to football, the CIF-Southern Section ALL SPORTS GUIDE features boys cross country and baseball. This season’s All-State Football Team includes a number of athletes who were also named to the All-CIF San Diego Section All-League Team. This includes three players from Culver City, two from Monrovia and three from Burroughs. In addition, Dan Morovick and Brian Bethke will be named co-player of the year.
The All-CIF Southern Section All-State Football Team includes 42 3a teams. Four of the Super 25 teams finished the season without a playoff win. They are: Burroughs, Culver City, Monrovia and Santa Ana Valley.
The All-CIF Southern Section ALL SPORTS GUIDE includes an updated version of the CIF-Southern Section All-Sports Guide on July 2. The CIF Southern Section will hold its championships at the Rose Bowl on November 25, 2014. The CIF Southern Section announced the pairings for the 2021 football playoffs at 10 a.m., and will recognize coaches of CIF-title winning teams with special recognition.
Those who follow the CIF-SS have a choice of three Orange County high school football playoff contests to choose from this week. San Clemente, Corona del Mar, and Long Beach Poly are all in the hunt for a playoff spot. The last time these three schools faced off in a league game was more than 15 years ago, but the competition is reminiscent of the good ol’ days. Those who are fans of the game will want to make sure to attend the Poly challenge on Saturday. It should be an exciting matchup.
Jefferson Davis High School has played its fair share of high school football, but the school is not particularly well known. The school is an API (advanced placement institution) for small public charter high schools in the East Los Angeles region. The school has been around since the 1950s and has won several championships, but it is still considered a work in progress. The school is currently ranked in the Top 10 of the Press-Telegram’s Top 10 High Schools.
The most impressive thing about this team was that it was coached by Jerry Jaso, one of the most successful coaches in state history. His linebackers included Howard Fagata, Joe Hughes, LeJuan Gibbons, and Lamon Jefferson. The Poly Panthers had a number of other notable feats, including a 147-yard effort on the ground and 28-for-28 in the air. The other significant milestone was a 31-0 league victory over the Jordan Bulldogs.
Currently, Winslett is majoring in physical education at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He is the first in his family to go to college. His father, Caldwell B. Cladwell, is the CEO of Urine Good Company, and his mother, Hope, is the wife of Cladwell’s boss.
In addition to his father, he has a sister, Hope, and a brother, Robert. Amongst his accomplishments, Winslett is probably the most proud of his accomplishments as a coach. He has helped his squad win three state championships, and has been named an all-conference and all-area selection three times. In addition to coaching, he has also served as a captain of the varsity tennis team. Amongst his many accolades, Winslett has received the prestigious National Honor Society award and the Golden Gopher award. He is also the top recipient of the school’s highest honor, the Jefferson Davis High School Sports Hall of Fame award.
