Located in Cantonment, Florida, J.M. Tate Senior High School serves 2,080 students in a 9-12 program. The school’s athletic program is strong, especially in football. In fact, the school has won seven state championships since 1960 in baseball, football, and basketball. The FFA chapter was founded in 1929, and the Showband of the South was the first Bands of America Grand National Champion.
In the academic arena, the school’s AP courses, advanced placement courses, and dual enrollment courses will prepare students for college and careers. The best part of the school’s AP(r) program is that the program has a low student/teacher ratio. Located in Flomaton, Alabama, the Escambia County Alternative School is not your average brick and mortar school. Founded in 1946, the school offers a variety of services for students with disabilities and special needs, such as physical and occupational therapies and a media center. The school is governed by the School District of Escambia County.
The Escambia County Alternative School has the honor of being the only one of its kind in the state. As the name suggests, the school serves students in grades five through twelve. The school also provides educational services to students who have been expelled from other schools. The school has a student enrollment of 20. The school’s most popular class is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program. The school board member who won the race in the August primary will serve out the remaining four years of the four-year term. This is the first time in a decade that a school board member is expected to have a child in a public school. This is a critical issue for the district because of the need to close the achievement gap. The Escambia school district was ranked 51st out of 67 schools on the total points on the Florida School Accountability Reports in 2021-22. In 2021-22, 11 Escambia schools were graded out as D or F.
Paul Fetsko was elected to the Escambia County School Board four years ago. Fetsko has a long history in education. He started his career as a teacher of deaf and blind students. He later served as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Fetsko retired from the Escambia County School District in 2012. Fetsko has a passion for improving student achievement. He prioritizes hiring highly qualified teachers and ensuring that students are safe. He is also a fiscal conservative. Fetsko’s wife, Kathy, is an educator. Paul and Kathy have raised three sons in the Escambia County Schools.
Laura Edler and Kevin Adams were also up for re-election in August. They are being challenged by David Williams and Connor Mann. Williams is a former Pensacola High School principal, while Adams is the coordinator of paralegal studies at Pensacola State College.
The school board has approved a resolution to celebrate Living Well in Escambia County Schools Month. They also approved a resolution to have a Fit to Achieve Day. This is an alternative educational program that students can enroll in during their full expulsion time.
The Escambia County School Board will vote tonight on whether to enter into a contract with Charter USA. The contract is expected to take effect in 2022. They will also vote to determine the status of Warrington Middle School. The school has been receiving failing grades for years. The Florida Department of Education has given the school an ultimatum. It must convert to a charter school by 2023-24. The school board will vote tonight at 5:30 p.m.
