Located in the Birmingham, Alabama suburb of Hoover, Hoover High School is a four-year public high school. The school serves students from the city of Hoover and the surrounding area. It is one of two high schools in the Hoover City School System.
Located less than an hour from Hoover, the University of Alabama is one of the top four-year public universities in the state of Alabama. Its undergraduate enrollment of 15,528 represents a wide array of students, including Hoover residents.

During the 2014 football season, the Hoover Buccaneers will be looking to tie Hazlewood High School’s all-time record of 13 Alabama state titles. Hoover has won nine state titles in the past 15 seasons in the state’s largest classification. If Hoover can repeat its 5-0 march in 2014, it will set a new Alabama High School Athletic Association record.
Hazlewood has won eight state titles in 12 seasons in the state’s smaller classification. The Buccaneers have earned all five state playoff spots in the last 12 seasons.
Hoover is the state’s most prolific high school football program. They have won 537-180-7, and tied Hazlewood with another 5-0 march in 2014.
Hoover is also one of only two Scholars Bowl schools in the district. The Scholars Bowl competitions cover math, philosophy, fine arts and pop culture. The Hoover High Scholars Bowl team includes about 25 to 30 students. The Scholars Bowl team includes players like Kenneth Curlings, Kapil Nathan, Sarah Xin, and Aiden Dombrosky.
In addition to its football and basketball teams, Hoover has a strong program in volleyball. The Buccaneers won their fourth state title in the last five tries. In a 73-64 win over Vestavia Hills in the AHSAA 7A state championship, Aniya Hubbard scored 30 of 40 points in the second half.
In volleyball, Hoover competed in 10 tournaments. Joshua Rutsky was the coach. The Buccaneers outscored Vestavia Hills 18-15 in the fourth quarter.
Having won four of the last six state championships, Hoover High School is not a name to be feared. But the school does have a couple of issues. First, the school has a relatively flat diversity in five years. Second, there are fewer seats available to students in southwest Denver than in other parts of the city. And third, the school is spending money on special education.
The school board will hold a second public hearing on the 2023 budget on Sept. 13. They are also expected to vote on the budget at 5:30 p.m.
While enrollment is expected to remain relatively stable for the next five years, a decline in birth rates will have an impact. The district expects to receive $24.3 million in special education funding in 2023, but the federal government only pays 12% of the total cost.
The school district is also spending more money on supplies and instruction. They will spend $11.6 million on the child nutrition program in 2023. And they will also add a theater to Hoover High School.
The school district also expects to receive $220 million in revenues for the fiscal year 2022. Its property tax fund is expected to increase by 24 mills to $47.3 million in 2022.

Moreover, it’s got a football team, an athletic department that’s been in the top five in the state for the past ten years, and a slew of nifty perks.
The school’s motto is “Hoover is the best”, a philosophy that’s backed up by an unwavering commitment to college readiness and a rigorous academic program. In addition, the school has a laudable number of state championships in 19 different sports. The football team has been featured in the MTV show Two-A-Days, and has made an overall appearance in 21 state championship playoffs over the past ten years. The school also has a number of impressive accomplishments in the classroom, including the state’s only STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) focused small learning communities. In fact, the school’s Linked Learning program has the highest student to teacher ratio in the state, and a stellar record for preparing students for the SATs.
The school’s most impressive feat isn’t the aforementioned football team, but rather the fact that Hoover is the only school in Alabama to place in the top ten percent of the state for overall test scores and math proficiency.
