Located in the suburban city of Homewood, Alabama, Homewood High School serves students in grades 9 through 12. It is the only high school in the Homewood City School System.
During his time at Homewood High School, Clay Burdeshaw has been a ballplayer on and off the field. In his sophomore year, Burdeshaw racked up 44 tackles, and in his junior year, he had 69 tackles. He is now a senior and will be a part of Homewood’s defense in 2017.
The Homewood Patriots put up a good fight against the Mountain Brook Spartans, but were ultimately beaten 28-0. The Patriots’ defense showed a willingness to play with aggression, as they picked off two of the Spartans’ passes. The Homewood defense was anchored by a pair of seniors: linebackers Jon Merrell and Carter Engle, and lineman Henry Watson.
A few other players had some notable performances. Rickey Gibson topped the charts with four interceptions, and he scored an offensive touchdown. Miller Chapman dominated the defensive side of the ball, recording eight tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery. He’s made 30 solo stops so far, and has 59 total tackles on the year.
Other players on the field with names that sound like they belong in an encyclopedia include linebackers Bradley Shaw and Kaleb Jackson, defensive backs DJ Estes and DeKendrick Bennett, and lineman Jordan Norman. Miller Chapman, in particular, has been a stud so far. He has three sacks and a fumble, and has also made 30 solo tackles and 59 total tackles on the year.
The Homewood Patriots have won their largest game of the season. Their win guarantees them the title of Class 6A, Region 3 champions. This is the first time that Homewood has won the Class 6A, Region 3 title in the last 12 years.
The Homewood Patriots have some of the best offensive and defensive players in the state, and they’ve shown a lot of heart and determination on the field this season. They have two chances to win the region title at home, but the Patriots are going to have to beat their rivals if they’re going to pull it off.
The Homewood Patriots shook off the rust and put together a good performance against the Mountain Brook Spartans. They may have played the team with the best defense in the state, but their offensive and defensive lines showed up to play.
Throughout the years, the Homewood Patriots have risen to the top of the Class 6A playoffs. Last season, the Patriots went 8-2 and earned a top seed in Group 6 Region 3. They also qualified for state playoffs in each of Ben Berguson’s eight seasons as head coach. Now, the Patriots have a new coach, one that has been inspired by the young team’s willingness to push forward.
This season, the Patriots have been led by quarterback Woods Ray. He has received two offers from Davidson College and Dartmouth College. He has thrown for 2,677 yards and rushed for 812 yards. He has accounted for 52 of the Patriots’ 56 points. He has led the Patriots to seven straight touchdowns.
He has also played offensive line with his brother, Harvey. They have been teammates since second grade. They have a strong partnership and have played together for most of their high school careers.
The Patriots have only allowed 10 points per game. They have defeated Chilton-County, Pelham, Jasper, and Briarwood. They will travel to Saraland in the quarterfinals. They have won four games in a row and are currently ranked No. 1 in Group 6 Region 3.
The Patriots scored a touchdown on seven of their first eight possessions. They led 20-7 at halftime. They only allowed one field goal in the fourth quarter. The Patriots were whistled twice for 20 yards. They were down by two points with 10 minutes to play.
The Patriots scored a touchdown on their next possession. They recovered a fumble late in the fourth quarter. Ultimately, they scored a touchdown on their last play of the game. They went on to win 24-21. The Patriots are headed to Saraland next week.
The Patriots will host McAdory Yellow-Jackets in the playoffs. Homewood is ranked No. 10 in the state. They are the top team in Group 6 Region 3. They have won two games against teams from Class 6A, Region 3. This is a testament to their overall success.

There are also a couple of incoming transfers aplenty.
The team’s top notch defense is the reason why the Patriots can score points on the scoreboard. The team will also feature a pair of experienced cornerbacks, a pair of standout safeties and a veteran quarterback. The front line is bolstered by a pair of impressive offensive linemen and a trio of speedy backups.
The Patriots will boast the most impressive array of players in the state of Alabama, thanks in large part to the arrival of a trio of superstars from the state’s premier program. The most intriguing is the emergence of senior quarterback and running back Sam Carr, a player who excelled in the huddle as a freshman. While the Patriots may be young, the defending champs are well stocked on both sides of the ball. The team’s defense has been bolstered by a pair of senior safeties in Blake Bunshaw and Charlie Goode. The aforementioned front line is bolstered by an impressive trio of backups in JaCorrie Ponds, J’veon Snow and Cameron Humes.
Having secured the #1 seed in Region 5 in a blowout victory, the Mountain Brook Spartans have won their second straight region championship. This year, the Spartans will travel to north Shelby County to play the Briarwood Christian Lions. They have also won their last four games over their rivals.
The Mountain Brook Spartans had an explosive run game. Jack King scored from two yards to cap the scoring. Colvin threw touchdown passes to Cole Gamble and Sims Brown in the first half. Gamble also rushed for 114 yards on 15 carries. Brown finished with two catches for 56 yards.
Colvin’s touchdown pass to Brown was his second of the night. Colvin had a big night overall, completing 9-of-13 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. He was wide open for a 41-yard touchdown pass to Brown in the first quarter. He also threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Sims Brown, his first of the season.
Mountain Brook led 10-0 after the first quarter. Homewood cut the lead to 28-14 at halftime. Homewood opened the second quarter with an 80-yard drive. After an eight-minute drive, Homewood went three-and-out on four of its first five possessions. On its fourth possession, Homewood moved the ball 77 yards to tie the game at 28-all. It was on the next drive that Homewood took a brief lead. But, Mountain Brook responded with two touchdowns in the second quarter.
Homewood started the second quarter with a 38-yard touchdown run by Jimmie Edwards. The Patriots’ longest drive of the game came later in the quarter, with Woods Ray throwing an 8-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Reeves. Those two touchdowns cut the lead to 28-14.
The Mountain Brook defense stepped up, forcing three punts. They also held Homewood to negative yards in the second half. A couple of Homewood mistakes led to two scores for the Spartans. Those two scores helped the Spartans pull out a win that secured the #1 seed in Region 5. The Spartans had a 5-2 record and were within a half-game of the playoffs.
Homewood had its chances in the fourth quarter, but the Patriots needed a miracle to win. Homewood went three-and-out on its last three possessions.
