Team’s offense pounding away at rival Mauldin

TL Hanna’s win over No. 2 Hillcrest High School on Friday was more than just a victory over a perennial 5A powerhouse. The Yellow Jackets (11-1, 3-0) showed off a balanced offense and a strong defensive front. It was a game of two halves, with the first half ending in a 27-26 tie. The second half saw Hanna outshine Hillcrest in scoring and rushing.

The most impressive part of the game was the play calling by juniors and sophomores, who combined for 195 yards of total offense. The Hillcrest defense held Mauldin to minus-27 yards on its first four possessions. While the offense managed to churn out just a few short-yardage gains, it was the secondary that was the most effective.

TL Hanna’s defense did its part, stifling Mauldin’s top-flight offensive line with multiple linemen. For a team that ranked fourth in the state in both rushing and passing yards per game, this was a pretty good night. Despite the loss, Hillcrest still boasted the best record in the region. In fact, Hillcrest is the only team in the area that has a winning record.

On the flip side, Hillcrest opted to take a bye this week, which allowed the team to rest up for their final two games against rivals Mauldin and JL Mann. The Rams will look to make the most of their free week. They will also take on a JL Mann squad that is averaging a whopping 411 yards of offense per game. For the most part, it was a close game, but Hillcrest was able to put the pedal to the metal in the fourth quarter. The final score was a squeaker, as Hillcrest finished with just 13 points.

For the second year in a row, Hillcrest finished with eight or more wins. The team is now atop the AHSAA Class 6A rankings and is 18 in ESPN300.
