Getting a high school football team started can be a bit of a challenge. There are many variables that can go into the decision, and it is important to consider all of them. Some of the factors include where the team will play and who the team will be made up of.
Those two programs met in the Class 7A Region 4 final two weeks ago and the winner will advance to the state playoffs. Both teams have won their last seven games and will meet again in the state semifinals. This could be the final game for one of them.
Vestavia Hills beat Austin last week and Robert Evans is confident his Rebels can beat Thompson. Evans said the goal is to beat Thompson twice this season.
Hewitt-Trussville is now ranked fourth in the state. Vestavia Hills, on the other hand, has four losses on the season.
The Rebels have scored touchdowns in both halves of the game. Vestavia led 16-0 with 6:17 left in the first quarter. Despite holding the lead, Hewitt-Trussville tied the game at halftime.
Hewitt-Trussville’s offense rolled up 512 yards. Peyton Floyd completed 16-of-29 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown. Jadon Loving hauled in four passes for 72 yards. William Tonsmeire led the ground game with nine carries for 63 yards.
Hewitt-Trussville’s defense forced Vestavia to use timeouts throughout the game. It took Hewitt-Trussville 13 plays and 91 yards to score its second touchdown of the game. They added a touchdown in the fourth quarter to take a 31-13 lead.
Hewitt-Trussville will play Spain Park next Friday and will visit Hoover next month. Vestavia Hills will play at Oak Mountain next week. This game will be broadcast on the NFHS Network and you can watch it for free.
It’s likely that the winner of this game will advance to the state semifinals and the loser will use the loss as motivation. Neither the Oak Mountain Eagles nor the Hewitt Trussville Huskies took flight in the first half. However, that changed in the second half. After Hewitt-Trussville held the Eagles to a single first down in the first half, the teams scored 27 unanswered points. The final score was 48-14.

Sawyer Deerman was a little more productive with his legs. He rushed for 106 yards on 16 carries. He also completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jarrion Street.
The Oak Mountain offense came up with a number of big plays, but the defense was the real story. O’Dell was sacked five times. The defense allowed Hewitt-Trussville to score 79 points.
The second half was a close one. The Eagles scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, but each team’s offense had a couple of touchdowns of its own.
The best teams are the ones that take ownership of the game. Oak Mountain didn’t find that in the second half. The Eagles couldn’t break through the offensive rhythm of Hewitt-Trussville, but they did use the kick return game to their advantage.
The Eagles were able to hold the Huskies to just 179 yards, but they weren’t able to stop the Hewitt-Trussville ground game. Drowdy Hackbarth and Tyrell Averhart each registered multiple sacks on the night.
Despite an abysmal first quarter, Hewitt-Trussville football at Spain Park had a big second half, pulling away for a 38-17 victory. Hewitt, now 5-3, improved to 3-2 in Region 3 and has a 5-2 series lead over the Jaguars.
Spain Park had a chance to cut the lead to seven points with 12 seconds left in the half, but a costly fumble followed by an unsportsmanlike penalty stalled the drive. A touchdown run by Omari Kelly gave Hewitt-Trussville a 28-0 lead, and a three-point play by Peyton Floyd put the Huskies up 28-0 with 2:30 left in the half.
Hewitt-Trussville turned the ball over on its own 29-yard line with 8:13 to play, but its defense befuddled Spain Park quarterbacks all night long. M.J. Smith had a touchdown-saving tackle at the 22-yard line. Jack Seymour kicked all four extra points for the Bucs.
Peyton Floyd threw a touchdown pass to Brett Moseley, and the Bucs added another touchdown on a short run by Omari Kelly. The Hewitt defense gave up just four yards in the first quarter.
Spain Park had momentum after the kickoff return. It took a holding penalty to block a Bucs run, but the Jaguars held strong for a few plays before the offense got on the field. The defense forced a turnover on a scoop and scrimmage. On the next play, James Hammonds tip-toed down the sideline for a 45-yard score.
Hewitt-Trussville led 28-0 at halftime. The Jaguars scored 10 straight points to start the second half, but the Huskies pulled away late. In the fourth quarter, Spain Park had a chance to cut the deficit to 27-10. It failed to convert on fourth-and-35, and a holding penalty stalled the drive.
Despite the loss, Hewitt-Trussville is still celebrating homecoming. Its next game is against Vestavia Hills. The Rebels dropped to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in Region 3 with the loss.
Hoover and Hewitt-Trussville have met in three of the last four seasons. Last season, the Buccanneers held a 24-23 victory. This year, they will meet in the quarterfinals of the Alabama Class 7A playoffs. The winner will advance to the state semifinals.
The defense for Hoover is led by linebackers Kaleb Jackson and Bradley Shaw, who are both Defensive Players of the Year. They have combined to register a total of 16 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. They are also two of the team’s top defensive backs.
The Hewitt-Trussville offense is a fast-paced attack that relies on its speed. They have a plethora of talented skill position players. Its defense is also a strong force. This was evident in last week’s game against Clay-Chalkville.

Hewitt-Trussville has lost two of three games and will look to rebound against Vestavia Hills. They have a chance to win their second region game this year.
Despite a solid start, Hewitt-Trussville football on Pike Road didn’t get any momentum in the second half. The Patriots were unable to convert a two-point conversion on their first possession of overtime.
The Patriots held Andalusia to 171 yards. The Bulldogs had two turnovers. One of them was an interception. They punted on their next possession. The Patriots were able to score twice more. They had a 68-yard run and a 7-yard run.
Pike Road finished with 291 yards on 55 carries. Sophomore Anthony Rogers was the main driving force for Pike Road. He finished with a 23-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He also returned a kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown. He also had four catches for 94 yards.
The Patriots have some notable players back on defense. Hunter Osborne has been a fixture on the line for Hewitt-Trussville. He is joined by transfer Connor Knight. He is a talented, physical player and was selected by Alabama Coach Bill Bell as the Hewitt-Trussville Mr. Baseball.
Pike Road has made four straight playoff appearances. The Bulldogs will travel to Phenix City this week. They will meet Central-Phenix City. Central-Phenix City is a Class 7A state runner-up. It will need a win over Prattville to win its region.
Homewood’s defense has played well down the stretch of the regular season. Last week, it played well against McAdory. It also paved the way for its first round playoff win. The Buccaneers will have their work cut out for them against Pike Road.
Pike Road is a top 25 team and has earned a spot in Class 6A. They will open their 2022 season against Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.
