During the season, the Gadsden City Titans football team has been playing well. The team has won four games and has lost only one. The team is led by a quarterback, Joe Smith, who is a senior. He has scored three touchdowns during the season so far.
During Gadsden City’s 21-16 win over Tuscaloosa County, the Titans showed off their athletic prowess by forcing the Bulldogs to punt twice. In the process, a fumble by Tuscaloosa County’s Brax Grissom was prevented and a slick return by Isaac Rodriguez averted disaster. The Titans were also able to notch their third straight victory, improving to 6-11-0 on the season.
On the heels of last week’s slam dunk victory over Southside-Gadsden, the Titans looked to continue their winning ways by taking on Thompson this Friday at Titan Stadium. The Titans were able to pull away from a close game, aided in no small part by the efforts of the aforementioned oh-so-handsome Ka’Mere Jones. On the heels of the Tigers’ first score of the game, the Titans turned the tides on the Tigers and rolled to a 38-31 victory.
In the grand scheme of things, Gadsden City’s most notable contribution to the football game was its third straight win, a feat that no one else in the region has achieved. The Titans racked up more than 100 yards of total offense, while the Bulldogs managed just 53. During the game, a couple of notables came out on top, including a performance by sophomore Donte Edwards that earned the honor of being a first-team All-State selection. As well, junior Ryan Grider recorded 19 tackles, while Connor Williams and Dylan Morton also made key contributions to the Titans’ defensive line.
A couple of other notables, including a solid performance from senior defender Will Anderson and a couple of impressive catches from the senior linebacker Alex McNeal, also impressed. On the flip side, a couple of the Titans’ offensive players, including the team’s leading rusher and rushing leader Kamari Jackson, failed to make the grade in the first half. A couple of the Titans’ most notable achievements were their defense, securing a pair of sacks, including a sack of Tuscaloosa County’s quarterback Brax Grissom on the aforementioned fourth-down play. The Titans did not allow a single sack in the second half, while limiting Tuscaloosa County to a total of seven yards on the ground.
Known as “The City”, Gadsden City High School’s football team is getting stronger as the season progresses. The team is expected to lead in the 2021 season as several players return and some new faces appear on the field. The team is also preparing for new faces on the special teams.
Gadsden City’s defense has been strong. The Titans have held opponents to two touchdowns and a field goal. They have also outgained them 290-167. They have also been caught up twice late in games.
The Titans are playing with confidence. They have defeated previously undefeated Oxford 24-7. They will play the Clay-Chalkville Cougars this week. The Titans have nine returning starters.
They will also play Hewitt-Trussville, Spain Park, Hoover and Tuscaloosa County. The Titans are also expected to win the region. They have also been in the state semi-finals. They will play Pell City next week.
The Titans will play a Friday game this week. The first half was postponed due to rain. The Gadsden City offense started out strong on their first drive. They drove 99 yards for a touchdown. Then they broke the tie on their next possession.
Gadsden City’s junior fullback, Alonzo Harris, rushed for 67 yards on 15 carries. The Titans also had a fumble recovery by Connor McGregor. Connor has recorded 60 tackles and four sacks in his career. He has also had six receptions for 106 yards. He is also a valuable blocker on the fullback position. Clay Coker was the first football coach at Westminster Christian. Clay also played football for Etowah County schools. He was a member of the Run, Pass, and Kick National Championship in 1964. He was also awarded the Colt League state MVP. He was selected to the Knight of St. Gregory the Great. He has also been honored by the Spring Hill College Hall of Fame and the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame. He has served as Coordinator of Officials for the Southern States Conference.
He was named the National Federation Officials Association (NFOA) Official of the Year for Alabama. He was also selected as the North Central District Official of the Year. He was selected by the AHSAA as an Association Officer, as an Instructor with the Alabama High School Athletic Association, and as a Program Coordinator with the Professional Association of Volleyball Officials. He was also selected by USA Volleyball as a Robert L. Lindsay Meritorious Service Award recipient in 2002.
He was also selected as an Etowah County High School athlete. He received a bachelor’s degree from Jacksonville State University in 1980. He also received a master’s degree from Jacksonville State University in 1981. He has also been a church pianist and a singer in a quartet.
He was also a member of the United States Track and Field Association and the Port City Track Officials Association in Mobile. He was selected as the State Track Official of the Year in 2008 and 2010. He was also named a NFHS Citation Award recipient in 2010. He was also named the Metro Mobile Golden Eagle Award recipient in 2011.
Coach Rob also coached at Hokes Bluff High School. He has a 59 game winning streak as a head coach, and his football team has won two state titles. He also finished as a state runner-up twice in girls basketball. He also coached baseball at Hokes Bluff.
