During the 2018 season, the Fyffe football team has been able to put together a very strong record. The team finished the season with a record of 14-1 and made it to the ahsaa 2A championship game. The team has been able to put up a number of great statistics throughout the season, including Blake Dobbins who leads the team with 1,820 yards and 32 touchdowns.
Known as the “Big Ugly” team, Fyffe High School won its fourth state title in the last five years with a 40-28 win against B.B. Comer at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium. It was the Red Devils’ second straight Class 2A state championship. The team finished undefeated for the second time in program history.
The Fyffe High School football team started off slow. The Red Devils fell behind early in the first quarter. The teams traded touchdowns in the first eight minutes of play. But Fyffe eventually took the lead. The score was 7-0 with 8:56 left in the first half. Payton Anderson rushed for a touchdown on a seven-yard run.
In the second half, Fyffe went back to basics. They drove 63 yards in 11 plays. Anderson scored twice on 29 carries. He also broke up two passes. He finished with 177 yards and two touchdowns.
Fyffe’s defense forced two field goals in the red zone. They were a huge part of the win. On the final play of the game, Fyffe drove 67 yards in four plays to score the game-winner. The Fyffe defense held B.B. Comer to just 28 yards in the final 1:03.
The Red Devils imposed their will in the second half. Fyffe won every game by more than 21 points. The Red Devils finished the season with a 15-0 record. The winning streak is their longest in school history.
Despite a three-point halftime deficit, Fyffe defeated B.B. Comer 40-28 in the Class 2A state championship on Friday night at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium. Fyffe’s Brodie Hicks, who finished with five touchdowns, was named the game’s most valuable player.
Fyffe also received state goaltending and regional goaltending diplomas. This is the eighth time Fyffe has appeared in a state title game. The Fyffe Red Devils have gone undefeated in each of the past four championship seasons. They are averaging 41 points per game. The Fyffe offense leaves the opposing team with fewer than three possessions per game.
The Fyffe Red Devils dominated the field of play and displayed a superior coaching and defensive scheme. They shut out 9 of 15 opponents. They ran 61 times and totaled 5 tackles for loss.
Fyffe quarterback Blake Dobbins threw three passes for 58 yards. He threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Richard Weed. His 186-yard rushing effort also earned him the game’s Most Valuable Player award.
The Fyffe Red Devils are one of the best defensive teams in the state. They have won three state championships in the past five years. They shut out nine of 15 opponents and have allowed only seven points per game. They have a solid team and a good coaching staff.
Having played in the Class 2A state championship game in Auburn, Comer was thrust into action against another Southern powerhouse. The Red Devils won the sixth AHSAA blue map trophy since 2014. After a scoreless first quarter, Fyffe scored on three consecutive possessions, including a fumble recovery, to take a 19-8 lead. In the second period, Hicks led two 11-play drives, including a 19-yard scoring run and a 7-yard run. He finished the game with 235 yards and five touchdowns.
Fyffe held the Tigers to a meager 58 yards on the ground, but the Tigers converted two of their two pass attempts. A touchdown by Tray Youngblood made it 26-8. The Tigers had their offense in the red zone twice, but failed to convert a two-point conversion. In the final quarter, B.B. Comer scored on the final two possessions to cut the deficit to 12 points. The Tigers stifled Fyffe opportunities in the final quarter, but Fyffe had its own chances. Including a muffed kickoff and a turnover, Fyffe had five tackles for loss. The Tigers were also helped by a fumble recovery and an interception.
Fyffe won its fourth Class 2A or 3A championship in the past five years. In addition to the title game, the Red Devils beat Pelham 31-24 in overtime in a semifinal game.
During the first quarter of Fyffe’s 40-28 victory over B.B. Comer in the Class 2A state championship game, the Tigers played some of the most scrimmage like football you’ll see on the field. The team held possession for more than double the time the opposition took to complete its game. In the end, the team compiled 66 offensive plays and scored a whopping 40 points. The team was led by an underrated duo of Kamore Harris and Ryder Gipson. Both scored touchdowns. Harris ran the ball 67 yards for the day’s first score, while Gipson scored his touchdown on a 1-yard run.
The Tigers also produced a well-balanced offensive line that was able to get their hands on the football. The Fyffe defense played well too, allowing just one touchdown and forcing three turnovers. One of them, however, was the most important. The team was plagued by a trio of sacks in the first half, as well as a fumbled kickoff that led to a touchdown.

The Red Devils were 3-for-5 passing for 58 yards, while the Tigers finished 6-of-11 for 130 yards.

Hicks’ first two touchdowns came in the first half, and he capped one of the drives with a 19-yard rushing touchdown. Hicks finished the game with 186 rushing yards and a total of 1,425 yards.
Fyffe had three complete drives in the second half, and they took a 26-16 lead at halftime. They led 40-22 with four minutes left in the game. During the second half, Fyffe held possession for more than twice as long as the opponent, and they were able to limit Tiger opportunities in the final period. Fyffe’s defense also recorded 5 tackles for loss.
Fyffe has now won four consecutive state championships, and Head Coach Paul Benefield was happy with his team’s performance.
