Among the many high-profile Class 3A playoff games played this week, none came as close to Mobile Christian’s 20-13 win over Trinity. He recovered two fumbles and tipped a pass in the end zone.

The Tigers took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. In the second, Mobile Christian showed their mettle with a 96-yard kickoff return. Patrick Sullivan Jr. added two touchdown runs of his own, while Jason Sullivan chewed the clock on a number of plays. A slew of pass interference calls stymied the Tigers’ drive. The Spartans had a chance to get the ball to the end zone on the next possession, but Hillcrest’s defense forced the team into a third-and-26 situation. This set up a punt that was returned deep into Saraland territory.

The Spartans were able to get into the end zone on the first play of the third quarter, but they failed to capitalize on the opportunity.

Hoover-Thompson II meet recent playoff nemesis Thompson

Defending state champions Thompson will face Hoover for the sixth time in the last seven years in the Class 7A playoffs. It’s a rematch of last year’s epic 9-0 victory by Hoover in the regular season. This time the Warriors are looking to return to the 7A state championship game for the first time since 2016.

Thompson shook off last year’s loss by Hoover to win the Class 7A state championship. A solid defense, the Warriors turned over the ball on downs just three times. In the process, they held the Bucs to just 136 yards of offense.

The Warriors got off to a hot start, scoring on a 1-yard plunge by AJ Green. The defense then blocked a Hoover punt and set up a first-and-goal from the 8-yard line. That’s a feat in and of itself.

On the ensuing drive, the Warriors turned the ball over on downs. That’s not exactly the best way to win a game. However, it’s still the best way to lose a game.

There are four teams that are the best in the state in the Class 7A playoffs. The winners will play for the championship on Nov. 30.

Vestavia Hills and Thompson are scoreless after the first quarter. They will play each other in the semifinals. This is the Raiders’ sixth straight trip to the 7A semifinals. The game will be held in Alabaster.

The game was decided by a two-point conversion. Mason Cartee had four touchdowns, including a 47-yard reception. Cartee rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Priceville won the Region 8 championship, finishing the regular season with a 7-0 record. Priceville is also ranked seventh in the Class 4A poll. They were previously ranked seventh in Class 3A. The Raiders are also the top-ranked team in Region 7.

The game is a key matchup in the Region 5 playoffs. Saraland leads Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 7-0. This will be the first of two key games on Thursday night. The other will be Saraland at Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.
