ECHS has been one of the most consistent schools in the state of Florida in recent years, winning a record eight straight regular season games and four consecutive state tournaments. This is due in part to the large amount of talented athletes on the team, as well as the high student-teacher ratio.
ESCAMBIA COUNTY Blue Devils were known for their ability to win no-holds-barred football games. But they were no match for W.S. Neal Blue Eagles on Friday night. ESCAMBIA COUNTY Blue Devills put together a 12-point win over Neal, but it wasn’t enough.
Neal led 14-0 after seven minutes of play in the first quarter, but ESCAMBIA COUNTY Blue Devils made it interesting with a 75-yard touchdown run by quarterback Marcus Folmar. After the touchdown, Neal’s defense held Escambia County to two first downs in the next seven plays. Neal’s defense forced Escambia County to punt. Neal then closed out the scoring with a five-play, 80-yard drive.
Neal’s offense was led by Nick Benjamin’s 22 points. The quarterback connected with J.J. Pitts on an out pattern for 14 yards to the 47-yard line. After the PAT, Neal had a 33-0 lead.
Escambia County’s defense also had a good game, holding Neal to no points in the second quarter. Neal’s first offensive play was a quarterback sneak, and Neal held Neal’s offense to three yards. Despite that, Neal still led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Escambia County quarterback CARNEL DAVIS completed three straight 100-yard games, but he also rushed for a TD. He gained 215 yards on 25 carries. He was also helped by the fact that the Blue Eagles’ defensive unit held Escambia County to a single first down for the entire game.
ECHS squeaked out a victory over a visiting Flomaton Eagles by three points, but they were not the only ones to get the nod. Haleyville High School also had a stellar game against the Tigers, and scored all of their points in the third period, thanks to a monster game from senior forward Joe Aldridge. Escambia County didn’t have much luck on the offensive end, but its man to man defense was a force to be reckoned with.
Escambia County’s winning streak went on the fritz after they took a 17 point lead early in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t until Hakeem Johnson hit a couple of big time free throws in the closing seconds that the Blue Devils really had a chance to run away with it. This was the first time the Tigers have beaten the Blue Devils since the 2009-10 season, when they were both regular season state finalists.
Escambia County got off to a good start with a seven point first quarter. The Blue Devils got a couple of early buckets to start the second, but Flomaton came charging in with a 4-0 run to end the first period. The Blue Devils led 30-22 with 4 minutes to play in the third, and it seemed like it was just a matter of time before the Eagles caught up.
Escambia County was well coached by Janice Kidd, and the Blue Devils played a solid game. Escambia County got a boost from the return of senior guard Jasmine Ireland, who missed the first three games of the season.
Despite a shaky start, the Escambia County High School Blue Devils rolled over W.S. Neal in a football game, 28-15. ECHS picked up a second region win and tied the Blue Devils for fourth place in Region 1.
ECHS started off with a big play on offense. Quarterback Chris Johnson ran a 13-yard touchdown for the Blue Devils. He also had a good throw to Markiece Daughtry for a 36-yard touchdown hookup.
Escambia County High School’s defense made a big play as well. They forced a fumble on the second play of the game. This helped the Eagles get to the Blue Devils’ 40-yard line. They also converted a two-point conversion on a pass from Johnson to Franklin.
Other big plays included a 75-yard interception return by Torian Brown. It was also the first time a Neal player has scored a touchdown since 2009 when Damian Williams scored a touchdown.
The Blue Devils made some big plays and missed others. Escambia County rushed for 259 yards. The Eagles defense held the Blue Devils to 41 yards in the first half. They also converted a few penalty yardage to make the score 28-15.
There were a few big plays in this game, but it was the Blue Devils’ second-half scoring that won the day. They converted three second-half touchdowns.

Escambia County got a nice boost from its taller frontcourt. The Blue Devils were able to outrebound Haleyville 39-24, and the frontcourt combined for four blocks. The Blue Devils also did a nice job on the defensive end, limiting the Lions to a 7-of-29 showing from 3-point range.
