Defending 3A regional champions Hayden High School football team has their work cut out for them this season. The Lions are a young team that will have to learn from mistakes and develop the team’s offense. In the meantime, they need to keep their defensive lines on their toes and be ready to stop the opposing team’s run game.
During the week of Homecoming, the Alhambra High Lions faced off against the Carl Hayden Falcons. The matchup was a close affair that ended in a 15-17 win for Alhambra.
A number of factors played into the victory. Alhambra’s defense was able to slow down the Carl Hayden offense and hold them to just five points. Alhambra also was able to take advantage of the opposing defense’s miscues.
During the second half, the Lions held the Falcons to two field goals. Alhambra also had a couple of key rushing plays. One was a big play by Tre Fields, who ran for a 310-pound touchdown.
Alhambra’s kicker made a great field-goal. It wasn’t the most efficient, however. It came to rest 20 yards beyond the uprights.
The Lions’ other most impressive play was the play to get the ball down to the Carl Hayden 5-yard-line. A bad snap from the center made it all the more impressive.
The Carl Hayden Falcons made a few other impressive plays. They got to Alhambra’s 1-yard-line with less than 30 seconds to go. They also had the longest touchdown pass in the history of Arizona high school football.
The other notable game-winning play was the one by Dominik Bagchi. The junior quarterback completed 14 of 16 passes for 254 yards. He also completed the requisite five touchdown passes.
The Lions were also able to run the length of the field on their first two plays from their opponent’s 10-yard-line. The biggest obstacle was a team that was stuck to its fullback position.
The Alhambra high Lions ended their season with a 15-17 victory over the Carl Hayden Falcons. They are a part of the Phoenix Union High School District.
During the 1920s, Long Beach Poly High School produced NFL players, including three who went on to play in the first NFL championship game in 1929. Since then, more than 60 athletes with Long Beach ties have competed in the NFL. Several have made memorable headlines in recent months. Some have even taken part in Major League Baseball.
Poly’s Gene Washington was the only Long Beach product to make four Pro Bowls. He’s also the only player to lead the school in receiving yards and touchdowns during his career. Hunt played baseball and football at Poly, and his kicks earned him a spot on the team’s special teams. He has signed a reserve/futures contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Smith-Schuster was one of the NFL’s top five receivers in yards this season. He has four million followers on social media. He also has business partnerships with several companies. His natural personality has helped him become a popular personality. His popularity has also helped him become the ninth Poly alum to make the Pro Bowl.
Hunt has spent most of the fall perfecting his baseball skills. He is also an All-American punter for Colorado State. He was a Ray Guy Award finalist in 2011 and an All-Region honoree in 2011. During his senior season, he kicked on the side of a powerhouse football program.
The Jackrabbits haven’t lost in the Moore League since 2009. They are just a nose behind Bakersfield, and could pass them in 2022. They’re also a strong contender for the all-time wins title. Poly hasn’t lost in the San Diego Section since 2009. The winners of the San Diego Section will match up with the CIFSS winners in D2 through D5.
The Jackrabbits have won a CIF championship and four CIF-SS titles. They are a top three finisher in the final state rankings.

In recent years, the Superior Panthers have been one of the best football programs in the state. They won a state championship in 2018, and their run in the playoffs was one of the most prolific of the decade. The Panthers made the state semifinals every year from 2013 through 2017, and in the past three seasons they’ve made the state championship game. With an 84-40 record, it’s no wonder that the Panthers are among the most storied programs in the state.
The Superior vs. Hayden High School football game will be televised on the Big Sky Network, with the kickoff scheduled for 7:00 pm. There are no official predictions on the outcome of the game, but the consensus seems to be in favor of a Superior win. In the past, Superior has been a powerhouse, winning 47 games compared to just 12 for Hayden. It will be interesting to see how far the two schools can go this season.

Defending 3A regional champions at Hayden high school football faced a tough test in their Sub-State championship game against Perry-Lecompton. The Wildcats were one game away from earning a trip to state. The game was delayed because of severe weather.
The Wildcats were able to hold Columbus to just four points in the first half. After the Titans tied the game, Hayden scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a commanding 32-12 lead. They then picked off Brett Hamilton twice in the second half to keep the Titans from scoring.
Hayden will next face Frontenac. The Raiders have won two state titles in the last four years. Their roster features seven seniors. Their defense will be a challenge for Hayden’s offense.
Hayden has won 10 straight games and will try to continue that streak. Columbus entered the match on a four-game winning streak. The Titans came into the game with a 3-5 record. However, the Wildcats have not lost to Holton this season.
Hayden will take on the Raiders on Friday at 6pm at Hayden Field. A victory will send the Wildcats to the Sub-State championship game. The Sub-State championship game will be played on the campus of competing institution.
Hayden’s defense will challenge the Titans’ passing game. The Wildcats will also be matched up against a bruising rushing attack. In addition, Hayden will play its first game against a team from the sub-state.
The Wildcats’ last loss was in district play against Holton. However, Hayden defeated Washburn Rural 41-7 in the Centennial League. Hayden has not lost to Holton since October 25, 2013. It was a close game at the half, 32-12.
Several school districts have been battling the question of whether or not to allow students to recite a pregame prayer over the stadium loudspeaker. They’re trying to find a balance between the free speech rights of all students, and the tradition of prayer at football games.
