Bibb County Chockaws Football: The Choctaws have had a good year so far. They have a 4-3 record on the season and are coming off a win against Jacksonville. They have also defeated Hale County.
Bibb County Choctaws football beats the Jacksonville Golden eagles by the score of 57 to 0 to claim the crown of champs and the kudos of best overall team. Not to mention a shiny new trophy to boot. This is the school’s first playoff berth since the late 90s. The Golden eagles will take the field against Vestavia Hills in the second round of the 7A playoffs. The ‘eagles may be a little young to win the school’s maiden voyage but a trip to the Gulf coast is never a bad idea.
The Choctaws were not without their share of duds. A few key players were missing from the starting line-up, but a healthy dose of grit and a little luck led to the winningest playoff performance in program history. The ‘eagles were also stingy in the trenches, but it was a good time for both sides. A slew of impressive second half drives was the icing on the cake, while the ‘eagles found themselves in a tight spot on the final play of the game. The ‘eagles are a lot closer now that the playoffs are over. The ‘eagles have a sluggish record this season, but a solid showing in the playoffs is always a welcome sight.
Bibb County Choctaws football defeated Hale County Wildcats 49-6 in week seven of the 2022 Alabama high school football season. Bibb County improved to 4-3 on the year, while Hale County dropped to 2-4. Hale County athletics has a lot of reasons to be optimistic.
The Choctaws scored a pair of touchdowns on the first two drives of the game. John Downs found Chris Billingsley for a 15-yard touchdown pass and Ethan McMillan for a 49-yard strike. Bibb County’s Colby Collums then scored on a 63-yard punt return in the second quarter. Then, Jaison Taylor scored on a three-yard run.
The Wildcats responded with a long drive of their own. Then, Hale County committed a mistake on the next drive. Bibb County responded with a nine-play, 76-yard drive. In the final quarter, Bibb County used the running game to milk the clock. The final touchdown came on Bibb County’s final drive for the starters.
In the first half, the Ironmen lost two fumbles. They also mustered -9 yards on eight of the eight first-half possessions. They also didn’t allow Williams to occupy the end zone in the fourth quarter. The Panthers took a 54-26 lead at the end of the third quarter. Bibb County didn’t allow a touchdown until the 5:13 mark in the fourth quarter.
Hale County threw an interception to Bibb County’s Colby Collums, who returned the ball for a touchdown. The Wildcats also had a fumble recovery.
In the third quarter, Hale County made a drive down the field. Jay Brown ran for a couple of long touchdowns. However, the Wildcats had another mistake in the final quarter. Hale County committed a holding penalty, which stalled the offense. Bibb County’s Colby Coleums then scored on a punt return. The Bibb County defense then picked off Zinnerman’s pass. The Bibb County offense finished the night with a 5-of-8 passing for 88 yards.
The final week of the regular season is when many of the biggest games are decided. In fact, three of the four games so far have been decided by 10 points or fewer.
Bibb County regrouped after a loss to Livingston on the road. The Choctaws used a short passing game to score three touchdowns in the first half. They led 35-0 with 7:35 left in the half. They found wide receiver Chris Billingsley for a 15-yard touchdown, and quarterback John Downs threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Ethan McMillan. Bibb County Choctaws ran out to a 49-6 win against the Hale County Wildcats.
The Bibb County School District is home to 21,159 students. In the past decade, enrollment has dropped 15%. A declining student population means fewer state dollars, which means school finance departments must find other ways to increase revenue.
The district is in the midst of developing a district plan entitled Built4Bibb, which will set goals for student achievement, parent participation, and attendance. The plan is due to expire at the end of the 2022-2023 school year.
The district is also seeking additional funding to improve the school’s central kitchen and to buy new buses. Bibb Schools will use ESPLOST money to make these improvements, as well as for other district upgrades. The district’s millage rate has been reduced by half a mill in August.
The district also has a nonprofit organization called the Bibb County Education Foundation. The foundation’s goal is to provide charitable giving to the school district.
The school district recently held two public engagement sessions. The data from these sessions will be used to develop a district plan for the 2023-2028 school year.
The school district has served free meals since 2014. The Community Eligibility Provision reimburses school systems with 40% of students in poverty for the full cost of meals. In addition, the district received federal funds during the pandemic.
The Bibb County school district has created a virtual academy, which provides a brick and mortar classroom for students who live too far from school. The virtual academy also offers extra help, as well as a remote learning option.
The school district has also hired back some positions eliminated last year. In addition, Bibb Schools has received $106 million from the American Rescue Fund, which helped to offset learning loss.
Bibb County’s football season ended in a loss at Tallassee on Friday night. The Ironmen lost two fumbles, suffered two turnovers and went scoreless on their first eight possessions. They were unable to get their offense going on Jack Warner Parkway, and they finished with -9 total yards. The Tigers took seven plays to reach the end zone with just under seven minutes left in the game.

Downs completed 5 of 8 passes for 88 yards and one interception in the night’s final quarter. Collums rushed for a second touchdown on the Bibb County’s third drive of the night, a 16-yard run.
The Tigers defense also recovered the third fumble of the night, while Bibb County’s offense finished the night with a two-point conversion to take a 24-24 lead. The Tigers’ offense tacked on a touchdown with just under seven minutes left in the game, but the Ironmen’s season ended in defeat. In the end, the Tigers ended the season with a 6-1 record and secured the second seed in the region’s playoffs. The Ironmen’s football season ended with a loss, but Bibb County’s players and coaches are already preparing for the next phase of their high school career. Bibb County will host a home playoff game in November. They will also travel to Gordo in a game that will be played on Thursday night.
