Baldwin County High School Football

During this time of year, we will always see a variety of sports teams from all over the country and sometimes even abroad. But, one team that we will always see is the Baldwin County Tigers.

Greene County Tigers

Several former Mobile and Baldwin County high school standouts are now in NFL training camps. Five former players were selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, including three players who have Mobile and Baldwin County roots. One was Billy Takoda Hinton, who was captured on Saturday. Several other former Tigers are expected to be selected at a later date.

After a slow start in the season, the Greene County Tigers finally started to roll. They were able to win their last game of the regular season, defeating previously-highly-ranked Washington-Wilkes. Their win came despite a number of injuries on the field. Some of the players that missed the game were quarterback Ty Mims, who is expected to miss the rest of the season, and receiver Andrew Vaughn, who is not expected to play this year. The Tigers went 20-18 over the last 38 games of the season.

The Tigers have a young core of players eager for playing time this spring, but they aren’t far from playoff contention. The Tigers will try to earn a spot in the Class 6A State Playoffs this spring. Some of the players to watch are quarterback Caden Creel, defensive end Reece Buck, and defensive tackle Trevor Murphy. The Tigers also bring back solid offensive and defensive lines. They have a talented group of young players who are willing to take chances, but they also have a solid group of older players who can lead the Tigers through tough matchups.

After a sluggish start, the Tigers got on the board early. After the opening kickoff, defensive back Diondre Jackson returned the kick 90 yards for a touchdown. A few plays later, running back Jamarion Johnson reached the end zone on a three-yard run. The Tigers were then able to stop the Knights on the first drive of the second half. They converted the two-point conversion on the following drive.

The Tigers’ defense also stepped up, preventing the Knights from moving the ball on the first three plays of the second half. In addition, the Tigers were able to take advantage of an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Tigers’ first drive of the second half. Greene went on to score four triples on the night.

The Tigers’ defense also got a huge play in the third quarter. The Tigers gave up a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, but the Tigers were able to stop the Knights on the fourth and one play of the drive.

The Tigers were also able to take advantage of a fortunate bounce on the ensuing kickoff. In the second half, the Tigers had a chance to convert on a second-and-two play, but they missed the opportunity. After another missed opportunity in the third quarter, the Tigers’ offense was able to score in the fourth quarter. They also scored on a 65-yard run by Tristan Williams. In addition, quarterback Ethan Crawford led an impressive effort, leading the offense with 55-yard bomb to Brandon McNulty.

DeKalb County Tigers

Despite being outshined on many fronts, the DeKalb County Tigers have managed to win three of their last four games and are a step away from playing in the state championship game for the first time in school history. The Tigers are led by senior quarterback and Southern Miss commit McGwire Turner and junior linebacker Jade Smith. The best part is that the Tigers are the only team in DeKalb County to have a winning record, which is no small feat in a state where schools like Georgia and Alabama dominate the football scene. This season’s schedule also features a number of non-conference opponents, including perennial powerhouse Greene County and defending state champion Mount de Sales. As such, the team is not a complete lock to qualify for the playoffs. Nevertheless, the Tigers have a solid foundation and should be considered the underdogs for the rest of the season. The Tigers are a talented group of young men and will be a tough matchup for any team, regardless of classification. Hopefully, the Tigers can maintain the momentum and come out on top against one of the area’s best defenses in Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa in the next round. The Tigers also boast a stout secondary, led by seniors Brody Dalton and Ezekiel Wilson. Combined with a potent offensive line and plenty of firepower, the Tigers should be in good shape for another year.
