The golden eagles are a Class 5A school that plays in the Region 8 competition. This is the largest high school football competition in the state of Georgia. They will be playing against teams such as Deshler, Russellville, and Effingham.
Several local high school football teams have the chance to finish their schedules before the season ends. This year’s schedule includes four new teams. Hopefully these teams will improve their play and take the next step. Some of these new teams have made playoffs in the past. In addition, the Golden Eagles will be facing four teams that they have never played before. Fortunately for Athens, they will play those teams in the last two weeks of the regular season.
With a little luck, the Golden Eagles could finish undefeated against their new regional opponents. Their schedule also includes an upcoming non-region game with the Brewer Patriots. The Golden Eagles will also face Columbia and Fort Payne. The Golden Eagles have a 6-4 record against their crosstown rivals. They haven’t played West Point since 2013. West Point hasn’t won against Russellville in eight tries.
In 2022, the Russellville High School varsity football season will begin with a trip to 7A Grissom. Grissom is an up and coming team, which made the playoffs in 2020. They lost to Pleasant Grove in the 5A semifinals, but went 12-2 last season. They also lost to Oxford in the regular season last year, 35-20. They are looking to improve on their last two seasons.
In 2021, the Golden Eagles went 4-6 and missed the playoffs. In 2022, the Golden Eagles will face four new teams and four new region opponents. They will be looking to improve every week. They’ve gone 2-0 at home this year, and they have two more road games remaining. They are looking for players to make big moves up the depth chart.
The Athens Mustangs are also looking to improve. They have three games remaining and are currently out of playoff contention. Their schedule includes a road game against Columbia and a home game against Hazel Green.

In Class 2A, Region 2, ISAIAH HUTCHERSON ran for 244 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries. He also recorded two sacks in 2021. His team averaged 34.8 points in Class 1A. The Golden Eagles are on the verge of a special season. They will play two Georgia 4A schools, and are also facing a tough schedule.
